PSU-Ohio State

Posted on 25 October 2008 by mikeharder

Ok so here is the deal.  I am a big Penn State fan.  Its not popular here in Nashville which is big time SEC country but I am so excited to see us going into Columbus Ohio as the number 3 team in the country.  We haven’t beaten them in Columbus for 7 years but hopefully we will prevail today.  Dean Fulks and I have been harassing each other already.  So… I am either going to be excited or really bummed out tonight.  Funny how a simple game in which I know no one personally can make a big difference in my emotional state.  Anyway, Go LIONS!

I find it interesting that people get so worked up watching sporting events. Looking at the big picture, will it make any difference who wins or losses the game? I’m sure this will get somebody fired-up but if it were up to me sports and education would not be connected (not in college, high school or grade school). I understand the reasons people give, teamwork and all of that, but I disagree with them. I think C.S. Lewis gave the extreme example in his autobiographical book, Surprised by Joy, when he talked about his days at Wyvern and (paraphrasing here) the jocks ruled the place and would brutally pick on the others. Why do we sanction this and give special privileges to athletes?

The same for professional sports (and I’ll include entertainers too), why do we pay them grotesque salaries to play (baseball, basketball, golf, football, music…)? We are a country (if not world) of lazy people living vicariously on the couch, worshipping idols on the TV. I don’t exclude myself here as I haven’t done anything athletic in years but if the Yankees or Mets are in the World Series I just might watch (if somebody tells me about it : ).

I believe God wants us to play ourselves using the talents he gave us, which honors Him, rather than watch others do it for us. I do understand the exception of watching one’s children/grandchildren play…

    Mike,

I am a big SEC fan and being down here in Birmingham you know we are excited about Alabama being #2. We could even see PSU and Alabama for the National title! I am also a big UFC/Boxing/Wrestling/NASCAR fan. I know Mark Driscoll is a big UFC fan also, so using one of his quotes “it’s Biblical”. I think we all need some kind of entertainment in our lives and for a lot of people it’s sports, movies, TV, music and the countless other things we can do with our time. It’s a mental break if you will. I believe the danger of any form of entertainment is when people get obsessed with it and put what ever it is before their families and especially God. A good example could be found down here in Birmingham, it’s amazing how many people worship NASCAR and Alabama/Auburn football. To them nothing else matters. I’m not sure all athletes are bullies. I have noticed a lot of them are actually Christians. One of the things that really move me about college football is how after the games a lot of the players from both teams will get together in the middle of the field for prayer. The same goes for NASCAR, before every race there is a prayer said for the drivers and crew. For me the key is balance. If we are spending more time following sports, music, TV, video games ect..than we are with our families and worshiping our Father then we are wrong and breaking the first commandment. But I see no harm in getting excited about our favorite team being undefeated, or our favorite driver winning a race. I really get excited when my hero Jesus Christ defeats the enemy and helps people be victorious in life.

    Your Brother in Christ,

    Chris
