I had a thought coming into work today as to why a corporate style coffee shop has done so well, like Starbucks... even beyond Memphis (of course). Coffee and teas can be like a comfort drink. People drink it when they go to read, go to invest in relationships and chat it up with a friend, on the way to work for a pick me up, on a first date, etc.... so as folks gain a "favorite" drink, if they are getting that fav from a local coffee shop, they are unable to fulfill that comfort drink exactly the way they're used to when they are not in the local area. Instead, Starbucks allows folks to pick that comfort drink and obtain it all around the city, and all around the country. Random, I know, but I was thinking about your reply from Mon and that popped into my head. :)

One thing I never really got is how there aren't more local coffee shops in Memphis. Starbucks has a strangle hold on that city. Otherlands is really the only quality local coffee shop I am aware of in Memphis.

I hear ya bro. I've never been a fan of the bucks, glad to see you are turned on to more local mom and pop stores. Never been a fan of the big corporate chains.

Here's a good website to check out.
